“You’re making a what?”: Carpet Edition

22 Nov

That has been the common question when I tell my plan on making my own carpet.  Well, actually it’s more like taking two ordinary carpets and butchering them to death and playing Dr. Evil to piece them together.  Awesomeness is what occurs when you do this.

Shall we take a look at the process of making your own custom rug?

The first thing you need to do is find two rugs that hit it off on a mini date.  These two couldn’t keep their hands off each other so it was definitely a go.

Close up of texture difference.  European furry and no hair American.

Once carpets are selected then all you need to do is get the necessary supplies.  Heres what I used.

Next, choose a design or pattern you want your carpet to have.  I wanted to let out my inner beast so I went with a zebra pattern.

I free handed the pattern on the back of the flat brown rug.  It helps to “color in”  the stripes with a sharpie.

When you’re done with that easy shmeezy step it’s time to start cutting.

I laid out each piece on the back of the white shaggy rug and traced it.  All you have to do next is to cut out the stripe on the shag rug and tape the brown carpet stripe in it’s place.

Super easy.

Gorgeous tape job.  We’re not going for looks here people.  Just make it stick.

Making your own custom carpet is a great excuse to make a mess.  Too bad you have to clean up afterwards.  Booooo.

Almost done.  It only took me about 2 hours to get to this point.  As soon as I was finished Miss Mini decided to take it upon herself to make sure the tape was really snug and secure.  Basically she rolled around in it for a while.  I love her to pieces.  Look how cute she is!

After you force yourself to clean up your mess the unveiling is ready to go.

Here it is!

I put it in it’s new home.  Notice the couches are able to breathe now.  I finally had to take the plastic covers off.  Ignore the mess in the background.  Our house is still a work in progress.

Over all, this project was a success and very easy to do.  If you have patience and don’t mind making a huge mess in the process then you should definitely give it a go.  Sophia and I are pooped so we’re signing off now.  Goodnight friends. 🙂
